Colt Andrews Elementary School in Bristol, RI, features a unique history with two main buildings: the original Colt Memorial High School (1906), a grand marble structure gifted by Samuel P. Colt in memory of his mother, and the adjacent Andrews School (1938), built later to expand the campus; today, the combined K-5 school uses both buildings, blending historic architecture with modern educational needs for the Bristol Warren Regional School District.
The Colt School (1906)
- Origin: A gift to the town from industrialist Samuel P. Colt, intended as a high school.
- Memorial: Built in memory of his mother, Theodora DeWolf Colt.
- Architecture: A monumental Renaissance Revival building of white marble, designed by Boston architects Cooper & Bailey, featuring a prominent Corinthian portico and the Colt family crest.
- Historic Status: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Andrews School (1938)
- Addition: Constructed directly across the street from the Colt School to accommodate growth.
- Modernization: The campus has seen recent renovations, merging the historic charm of the Colt building with modern facilities.
The School Today (K-5)
- Campus: Operates as a single K-5 elementary school under the Bristol Warren Regional School District (bwrsd.org).
- Grade Split: Lower grades (K-3) are often at the newer Andrews building, while upper grades (4-5) and special classes (art, music, library) are in the historic Colt building.
- Community: A US Department of Education Blue Ribbon School known for its inclusive environment, strong community ties, and innovative programs.
